Indianapolis City-County Council Proposes Tax Increase for Road Repairs

The Indianapolis City-County Council is considering a proposal to increase the vehicle excise surtax and wheel tax for the first time in over 30 years. This initiative aims to secure consistent funding for the city’s deteriorating road infrastructure.

Council Democrats introduced the plan, emphasizing the necessity of raising these taxes to address the city’s pressing road repair needs. Council President Maggie Lewis acknowledged the financial strain on residents but highlighted the importance of securing matching funds from the state legislature to tackle the $1 billion infrastructure funding shortfall.

Mayor Joe Hogsett opposes the tax increases, maintaining his longstanding resistance to raising taxes. However, the council has the authority to pass the proposal without his endorsement. With backing from 12 of the 25 Democratic council members, the plan is likely to be approved.

Proponents argue that this move is crucial for securing a $50 million annual infrastructure match from the state of Indiana, providing dependable funding for Marion County. Public comment sessions are scheduled for June 9, 11, and 16 at 5:30 p.m. during council committee meetings.
